At BuddyUp, we make the NDIS simple — turning plans into real support, independence, and connection.
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a program designed to provide individualised support and care to Australians with disabilities. Launched following the passage of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act in 2013, the NDIS represents a significant shift, enabling individuals with disabilities to live independently, acquire essential skills and actively participate in their communities.
The NDIS supports over 500,000 Australians with disabilities, enabling them to access necessary services and supports. This includes approximately 80,000 children with developmental delays, ensuring they receive early interventions for the best possible outcomes throughout their lives.
Want to know more?
The NDIS is here to support people with permanent and significant disabilities to live more independently and achieve their goals. You may be eligible if you’re under 65 years old, live in Australia as a citizen or permanent resident, and need ongoing support with everyday activities. If you’re unsure, our friendly BuddyUp team can help you understand the process and find out if you qualify.
The NDIS funds a wide range of supports to help participants live more independently and reach their goals. These include help with daily personal activities, assistance to access the community, support with employment and education, transport, and therapeutic services such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy. The NDIS may also fund home modifications, mobility equipment, and assistive technology to make day-to-day living easier. All supports are tailored to each person’s individual needs and goals.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS support that helps people with disabilities live as independently as possible while receiving the daily assistance they need. With SIL, participants live in shared or individual homes where support workers — or Buddies — provide help with everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, personal care, and community access. The level of support is tailored to each person’s needs, promoting independence, safety, and choice in a comfortable home environment.
